Rail

GNSS services offer vast opportunities across several rail domains, both for passenger and goods transportation. For instance, GNSS can provide improved accuracy and resilience, helping to improve safety during train control and signalling. Improved traffic management can also help to reduce delays and to provide more reliable information to passengers and shipping partners. Low-cost GNSS-enabled devices can also be used on containers as part of intelligent logistics, helping to provide greater contextual information to shipping providers.

In addition, Driver Advisory Systems (DAS) can help to support train drivers in improving the efficiency of train operations, for instance by allowing for improving speed management and helping to support early braking in case of potential collision. The number of such devices quadrupled between 2011 to 2016, with the majority of use being for freight traffic. However passenger train applications have grown significantly in countries such as the UK and Denmark, with high growth in other EU countries expected to follow.

Given the importance of rail systems in countries such as India, Japan and China, there exists much potential for the further application of EGNSS in these countries. The European Rail Traffic Management System is a leading global standard, with implementation already in key parts of the rail systems of China, India, South Korea and Taiwan. The High Accuracy and Authenticated services of Galileo can contribute further to establishing efficient, effective and safe rail operations across Asia-Pacific.
